Last time I was here, I ended with these questions:
Does “duty to God” mean something we have to do because we are legally obligated to do it?
How will learning about true submission to God affect a wife’s submission to her husband?
The bible tells us that no person is righteous.
as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one;
No person on this earth is righteous (good and does good constantly) on their own. And this is because we are all born in sin and shaped in iniquity (Psalm 51:5). That is how we are- sinners.
And sinners sin. And sin separates from God.
So what does that say for us? That we sinners are destined be separated from life without God. But praise God that He did not leave us to perish in our sins! He gave us hope, a second chance…His Son who is Life.
And why did He do it? Because of LOVE.
Now where does this notion of our “duty to God” come in in light of all of this? Well, since God is the only one righteous, He is the only one who can truly be followed, obey without any fear or reserve. But more than this, He is the only who truly does everything for our best good at whatever cost to Himself. And this is all because of His love. And so we respond to Him, not because of what He can give us, or because of what He has given us, but because we see His love and in turn choose to love. Him back.
This is our “duty”- a response of LOVE.
It is not something that is forced, demanded, expected. Love can’t be forced, demanded. It is a choice.
And so our first duty to God has nothing to do with a legal requirement or obligation. It is us choosing to love and allow God to lead us because we know that He loves us and will only do what is best for each and everyone of us because He is eternally righteous.
We can’t implicitly follow any man because men are sinful. We can only follow God.
As wives, when we choose to follow Our Saviour in the way we live, we are indeed being an example to our husbands by showing them who is the person we should solely turn to, who is the only one who deserves our worship and obedience.
So today, let us pray for wives, that we choose to follow God first so that He will guide our every step. Let us pray that wives put God in His rightful place, as the only righteous one, who can be completely obeyed because there is no doubt that His way is the right way and that His way is for our best good.
