We often hear about having faith. When tough times hit and we are uncertain about the future, people tell us to have faith. When we long to have something that we can’t seem to get, we are told to have faith.

But despite how often the word faith comes up, many of us don’t really understand what it is.

What is faith?

Simply put, Faith is believing or trusting in God.

It is not theological, or philosophical. It has nothing to do with eloquence, intelligence, social standing, age. Oh no! Faith is simply trusting. When we have faith in God, it means that we  trust Him.

But, why can we trust God?

We can trust Him because we know Him.

What would you do if a stranger came up to you in the middle of town and said, “Trust me. Come with me.”

Would you go with that person? You probably would say, “I don’t know you. How do you expect me to just follow you?”

God doesn’t want to be a stranger to us. God wants us to know who He is so that we can confidently come to Him because we know who He is and how much He loves us!

If we have a good friend and someone comes and tells us something negative about our friend, we are likely not to believe them. We would say, “No, I don’t believe that! Not my friend. He wouldn’t do that.”

God wants us to know Him so well that when the devil comes with all of his lies about God we can confidently say, “Not God! He would never do that!”

And so He reveals Himself to us so that we can know Him and have faith in Him.

John 15:13-15 (KJV)
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.  Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

God wants us to be His friend. He wants us to know Him so that we can have faith in Him.
